They dined and wined themselves in Mt Difficul…ty winery until Roger rescued them in June. Since then they are in foster care but are ready to go to home with someone understanding and patient. They love playing, especially chasing red dot. Mama Kat is very vocal demanding treats whenever you open fridge or come home from work. They are happy to share bed with you or completely take over it. They were good buddies to other foster cats especially to kittens. The only catch is that they do not like to be touched, or hold on lap. Unless they are given no chance and have to do so. They do not mind to touch you especially when feeling you are not doing your duties of entertainer well enough. Boys are getting more bold every day so we believe that with right person taking it by their pace they have potential to be loyal cuddly pets.
Desexed, had 1 and 2 vaccination, microchipped. Clean and litter trained. NZ residency required and adoption fee apllies. Let’s give this boys loving home they so deserve Contact Marcela 027 529 4674

I’ve always been amazed at how many cats are able to find their way home when their family moves out of town. We’ve all read about incredible journeys of a cat covering hundreds of kilometres and arriving bedraggled and a bit hungry but otherwise just in need of a hug and a warm bed. How do they do it?
Firstly we need to remember cats are very territorial. They spend an enormous amount of time and effort in marking out their territory, sometimes fighting over spraying rights and getting to know where the “no go zones” are in their territory. Cats don’t realise that sometimes we need to move for work, economic or social reasons and when we yank them out of their well developed territory. It is their instinct to try to get home. Does that mean cats appreciate their territory more than they appreciate us? Hmm not sure I want to know the answer to that one!
We also know cats have a very broad range of hearing and can pick up clues about where they are with train noise, aircraft noise or even a flowing river. Because they’re close to the ground they pick up vibrations through their sensitive paws and are able to hear wildlife noises much better than us all of which can give them clues about where they are. Because they don’t see colours as well as we do the trade off is much better vision in low light so they’re able to cover a lot of territory while a lot of the world is off busy streets thereby increasing their chances of getting home. Lastly it’s been found that cats have magnetic sensors in their wrists which could possibly be used to detect changes in the earth’s magnetic field. By attaching a magnet to a test cat scientists were able to disrupt the cat’s homing ability which adds support to the magnetic field detection theory.
However they do it it’s remarkable and shows what determined little buggers they are.

Here’s a great story. I came across this when listening to Stephen Fry’s QI podcasts, Always good fun and interesting. Anyway, Tara is a 7yr old tabby from California who is currently enjoying a year’s worth of free cat food after winning the strangest of awards, the U.S.A National Hero Dog Award. You can view Tara’s award winning performance here when she bulldozed into a neighbour’s dog which was making an unprovoked attack on Tara’s 6yr old family member Jeremy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckDVpihCPq8

Unfortunately Jeremy received 8 stitches in his leg but you can’t help but imagine how much worse it could’ve been had Tara not been there and not had the courage to put her life on the line. Jeremy is autistic and calls Tara his hero now. Jeremy’s Dad says the relationship between their adopted cat Tara and Jeremy is incredible. Whenever Jeremy falls off his bike or has any sort of accident at all she comes running to him, she is so protective of him and we’re so lucky to have such a loyal family member like Tara to watch over Jeremy. The incident with the neighbour’s dog has given us a lot of security over Tara’s ability to watch over Jeremy if ever he gets into trouble around the house.

Cats are often portrayed as being selfish and uncaring about anything other than themselves (certainly sounds familiar to me with our 3 cats!) and it’s really puzzling as to what has motivated Tara to be so protective over young Jeremy. Incredibly brave cat!

The most descriptive body part a cat has is its tail and there’s nothing a cat would like more than for us to understand what it’s communicating when it swishes, puffs out, raises or lowers its tail. As a general rule the more of your cat’s tail that is moving then the more of an emotion your cat is feeling.
A cat’s tail is hardly ever still, even when they’re dozing in front of their fire they will often be swishing their tail around a wee bit. The more relaxed they are the less they move their tail.
We all love to see our cats hold their tail straight up when they see us because it means they’re confident with us. Of course it could also be “cupboard love” when they associate seeing us with meal times too! But take a closer look at that upright tail, if you cat gives its tail a little shimmy or quiver then your cat is genuinely excited to see you and is confident you feel the same so it’s a great opportunity to give your cat some affection. If the tail has a small curl at the tip then our best guess is that the cat is pleased to see you but is uncertain if the feeling is mutual.
If you’re stroking a cat and it’s purring but starts to swish the tail then it’s probably time to stop stroking as the cat is trying to say it has become fed up with the attention but it doesn’t know how to stop its human from discontinuing.
We’ve all seen the brush tail shape a cat’s tail puffs into when she’s ready to fight or defend herself to make herself appear bigger and more imposing. However if the brush tail is horizontal or lowered the cat is saying she’s ready to defend herself with violence but doesn’t really want to whereas if it’s vertical then she’s ready AND willing to rumble.
When you see your cat sitting upright with its tail curled around its body it shows that it’s not 100% sure of its surroundings whereas when the tail is straight out along the ground behind it it feels perfectly secure and knows there’s no danger around.

Why do cats purr? Yes it does mean they’re happy but they also purr when they’re in pain or upset. Our best guess is that they’re saying to us ” please settle with me” because they either want to share their good mood with you or they are looking to you to comfort them. It could be the cat version of us crying or laughing or even humming to make ourselves better or distract us from something

Scientists have noticed that one of a pair of cats will curl up beside its injured buddy to what scientists initially assumed was to soothe the injured one as it’s almost universally perceived as a pleasant sound. However cats purr in a sound range that also stimulates tissue regeneration. It could just be a coincidence but we all know that regular exercising especially high impact is good for bone density because we are putting pressure on the bones and they respond by becoming stronger.

Cats as we all know spend a lot of time sitting or lying around but cats living in the wild still need their bones to stay strong for the explosive bursts of activity required to catch their prey (unless of course they are lucky enough to find themselves in a Queenstown Cat Rescue colony) and purring may be an evolutionary development that keeps bones strong. Clever cats!
